The Microsoft Error Checking utility scans your hard drive for bad sectors, parses system error messages to determine if perfectly safe files or folders are misplaced, and simply fixes the errors. This error checking utility is also known as Check Disk. Use this utility to find and fix hard drive errors.

This website explains how to scan a specific drive using the Error Checker item in Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 8. Variants for Windows 9, Vista, and XP are included.

How To Scan A Disk Using The Error Check Tool

Is error checking the same as chkdsk?

Check Disk (chkdsk) is a command line tool that checks the file procedure and the physical disk. Error checking is just a GUI for the chkdsk command line tool.

By scanning your hard drive with an error checker, you can check for and possibly fix a number of hard drive errors. The Windows Error Checker is a graphical transcription of the chkdsk command command line command, which in turn is always available and offers much more advanced error checking options.

The bug is undoubtedly present in Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, but there are differences as stated.

    1. How do I check for errors in Windows 10?

To start a scan, right-click on the drive you want to check and select Properties. Then go to the “Tools” tab at the top and click the “Check” button in the “Error Checking” section. This choice checks the drive for system tracking errors. If the system detects any errors, youmost likely, you will be asked to check any disk.

Right-click the Start button and select File (Windows Examiner 11/10/8), Open Windows (Windows Examiner 7) or File Explorerto” (Vista/XP).

File Explorer is also ready through a quick search. Windows Explorer in earlier versions of Windows is also available under Computer or My Computer on the Start menu.

    2. Select This PC (Windows 11/10/8), Computer (Windows 7/Vista), or optionally My Computer (XP) on the left.

      How do I run chkdsk?

Click “Start” and, if necessary, “My Computer”.Right-click the hard drive to scan and select Properties. In the Local Disk Properties window, click the Tools tab.Click Check Now.In a separate window, check the box next to Check Disk Local Disk to automatically fix file system errors.Click Start.

You may need to make sure you open the panel from the View menu if you don’t see this option. In XP, this is under View > Explorer Bar > Folders.

    3. Right-click, optionally long-press the drive you want to finally check for errors (usually C) and select Properties.

If you don’t see any trips under the heading of the person found in step 2, select the small arrow on the left when you want to view a list of trips.

    4. Select the Tools tab at the top of any window.

    5. What you are doing now depends on the version of Windows you are using:

    6. Windows 11, 10, and 8: Select “Scan” then “Scan Disk” and skip to step 8.
    7. Windows 7, Vista, and XP: Select the checkboxGrab now and go to step 6.
    8. Before running a read error check in Windows 7, Vista and XP, there are two options:

    9. Fix system errors automatically, if possible, automatically fixes file system errors detected by the scan. We strongly recommend checking this setting every time.
    10. Scanning for bad sectors and recovering results from them while looking for areas of the current hard drive that may be defective or unusable. If detected, this tactic marks these areas as “bad” and prevents your computer from touching them in the future. This is a very useful feature, but it can increase the scan time by several hours.
    11. error checking tool

The first idea is equivalent to running chkdsk /f, and the second idea is equivalent to running chkdsk /scan /r. Checking both options is the same as running chkdsk /r.

    12. Press start.

    13. In addition to waiting for error checking, the wait feature scans the selected problem drive for errors and fixes any inconsistencies it finds based on the pairs you choose.meters and/or detected problems.

If you’re getting a Windows message that your hard drive is used infrequently, find the Hard Drive Check Schedule, close any open windows, and restart your computer. You will notice that Windows takes much longer to start up and you will see some text displayed while the error checker (chkdsk) starts the process.

    14. Follow the advice given in the analysis. If errors were found, you may be prompted to restart the endpoint’s computer. If no errors are found, you can close all open windows and continue using your laptop or desktop as normal.

If interested, check out the Application Events document in Event Viewer for a detailed scan log with error checking, which was later corrected when something was fundamental. You may have trouble finding it, pay attention to event ID 26226.

    Know What

  • Select this computer. Right-click or to press and hold the player. Select “Tool Properties” > > “Analysis” > “Disk Analysis”.
  • Wait for the scan to complete. Follow all instructions. You may be prompted to restart your computer.
  • You may need to enable the navigation bar after Show Menu if you don’t see this option. In XP, this is displayed under View > Explorer Bar > Folders.

If the title you created in step 2 is not just for drives, click the small left arrow to access the list of drives.

The first procedure is the same as running chkdsk /f, and the second is the same as running chkdsk /scan /r. Checking both is incredibly similar to running chkdsk /r.

If you get the message Windows cannot check the hard drive you are using, select Schedule a hard drive check from CD, close all other windows to open them again, then restart your computer. You will notice that it takes much longer for Windows to start up and you will see text on screen because error checking (chkdsk) has definitely completed.
